Though the area was explored in 1615 its name didn’t become an official title until 1796. Today it is one of 6 boroughs that’s been gobbled up and incorporated into the municipal plan to form the mega city of Toronto.
Flanked by Lake Ontario to its south and the Humber River to the east, Etobicoke lies mainly within the western section of Toronto. The region itself is a contrast of cultures and classes and features the best and worst the city has to offer. Some areas have become industrial centers and concrete jungles of expressways and thoroughfares, while others like Rexdale or Jamestown are a surfeit of low rent apartments. They contrast with areas like The Kingsway or Humber Heights-Westmount where its quaint surroundings of the Humber Valley offer quiet creeks, old world mansions and the epicurean delights of European bakeries. Generally, real estate in Etobicoke is quite good and varied depending where you choose to live and the type of accommodations you want. Condominiums can be found for sale or rent in many neighborhoods at varying degrees of price. Whether it’s a three-bedroom tower apartment condo with a great view or a luxury two-bedroom tower condo with a waterfront view and a full ensemble of amenities like a dry cleaner, a fitness center, convenience store on the property and reserved parking etc.
Townhouse condos such as detached or semi-detached were priced fairly as well. A quick glance at some in the area showed a 3-storey, four-bedroom, semi-detached townhouse available at a very reasonable price. There are plenty of great finds obtainable. You just have to know what you want and what kind of amenities are important to you. Your lifestyle will pretty much dictate your preferences. But whatever you want you will find it here in Etobicoke. For the most part the area is well served by the Toronto transit network, but in certain areas (those closer to the expressway jungle) there is less access to public transportation. Parks and green spaces are in abundance and of note is James Gardens, a stretch of beautiful flora and fauna along the Humber River area. The Gardens includes all sorts of flowers, streams, waterfalls and walkways and is a photographer’s delight. Some of the famous people who have resided in the area are actors Kiefer Sutherland and Keenu Reeves and many other celebrities from all walks of life. For gambling entertainment there is the Woodbine Racetrack and Casino, which offers horse racing and slot machines.
There are plenty of sports activities available from ringette to cricket and soccer to swimming. A host of other athletic interests are also offered. You won’t be at a loss if you are an avid sports fan. There are also many schools in the area for all grades. So if you are concerned about the kind of education available for your kids, don’t be.
