On November 3, 1999, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, Premier Mike Harris and Mayor Mel Lastman announced the formation of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Task Force. The Task Force proposal underlines the tremendous opportunity that the waterfront offers the City as one of the largest urban renewal projects in the world. This report describes how to build on this impetus, taking advantage of an historic junction of interests, ideas and an energetic economy.
The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Task Force Report extends the vision set out in the 1999 report, Our Toronto Waterfront! — The Wave of the Future. It describes an exciting new Toronto waterfront that would be opened up to all Toronto's citizens and visitors. The Condo Company has learned that the new waterfront would include over 400 acres of new parks and open space, a continuous waterfront promenade, new cultural and tourism facilities, 40,000 new housing units and luxury condos and 10 million square feet of new space to feed new economy businesses with many new condos for sale. In a bold move, the proposal also calls for the replacement of the elevated Gardiner Expressway and $800M in new transit improvements to make it easier and more convenient for commuters to travel to, and around, the downtown.
Toronto's waterfront real estate is our front porch to the world. With the right kind of investment, the waterfront will become a necklace of green, with pearls of activity; people living, working and enjoying it with pride and passion. The new Toronto waterfront will offer the quiet joy of strolling along miles of wetlands, parks, boardwalks, promenades and heritage foot trails. It will offer the excitement of arts festivals, bike and boat races and activity-filled public squares
All this activity will create the synergies needed to draw even more jobs and investment to Toronto. Toronto's waterfront condos and their quality of life may be our greatest competitive attraction. Our new waterfront will be a model of how economic development, environmental protection, and cultural and recreational growth can go hand in hand, each complementing the other. Toronto's waterfront will become a magnet to tourism and will make Ontarians proud of their capital. |
